Abstract This article provides a systematic review of the digital divide , a phenomenon which refers to disparities in Information and Communications Technology access, usage, and outcomes. The Internet was meant to be this great contest of ideas. But instead of expanding our perspectives, the Internet shows us what it thinks we want to see. Is it also dividing us? The newest generation of algorithms, pieces of code that function like behind-the-scenes instructions, are ranking our preferences and filtering content online. The digital divide is the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology (ICT) and those with no or restricted access.
